Truffles, or tartufo in Italian, is a mysterious fungus which grows from spores which attach themselves to the roots of oak trees and can appear and disappear from one season to the next. Collectors traditionally use dogs or pigs to find truffles, which have a strong scent and are valued as a table delicacy. With the opening of Tartufo, the search for truffles is over.
Imaginative Italian dishes and well-chosen reasonably priced wines make Tartufo a must try. Indeed, Tartufo is the sort of place you always wished would open next door. Driving or even walking from Mgarr Harbour, you would never guess at the Italian delights that lie within this tavola calda, pizzeria, cafeteria. The aromas of antique Italian cooking and Italian style furnishings, along with the Napolitan music which often fills the air, make a characterful backdrop to healthy eating.
Tartufo's Italian chef produces a simple but enticing tavola calda menu which changes regularly. Some of the mouthwatering dishes that have already been introduced at Tartufo are given overleaf.
